New-York Bucket hat

The New York bucket hat is knitted from top to bottom and in the round. The base of the hat is formed by a series of increases until the desired circumference is reached. The fold is then formed by joining two rows together. The body of the hat is knitted in stockinette until it reaches the desired height. The brim is knitted in stockinette and lined.
The originality of the bucket hat is that it can be personalised as you wish, by embroidering with your leftover wool. For a soft look, opt for mohair, baby suri or other long-haired yarns.
The hat’s construction means you can make a hat tailored to your head size.
Size guide
The New York bucket hat is worn with a negative ease of 8 cm /3 in. For example, if your head circumference is 56 cm, then your hat must be knitted so as to obtain a circumference of 48 cm.
The pattern allows you to knit the bob according to any head circumference. It will be necessary to calculate the number of stitches to be obtained at the end of the hat crown increases.
Yardage
The yardage you need depends on your head size. You should allow about :
- 150 g (=255 m/278 yds) for a head circumference of 56 cm/22 in (S-M)
- 180 g (=300 m/328 yds) for a head size of 59 cm/23 in (L-XL)
Suggested yarn
The bucket hat is knitted with DK yarn held in double. We recommend using a strong yarn, such as hemp or cotton for plant fibres, or non-superwash merino for animal wools. Bouclé wool may be also ideal for this type of work.
The yarn used to make the model is Natissea’s Damya quality, made from 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton, which gives it a lovely hold.

Gauge
Gauge size with US 8/5,5 mm needles in stockinette with 2 threads held together : 16 sts x 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm or 4 x 4 in.
