Knitting pattern test

What is a pattern test?

Before a pattern is officially published, there is one final, essential step for the designer: the pattern test. This step involves entrusting the project to a volunteer group of knitters to ensure that the instructions are clear, to check the garment’s fit, and to verify the consistency of the instructions provided in the pattern.

What we expect from participants

Commit to knitting the pattern within the specified deadline, provide any feedback, and submit the final measurements at the end of the test.

The deadline

The deadline varies depending on the complexity of the pattern:

  • An accessory (hat, scarf, etc.): 4 weeks
  • A sleeveless garment using simple techniques: 6 weeks
  • A sleeveless garment using complex techniques: 8 weeks
  • A garment with sleeves: 10 weeks

Compensation

Testers do not receive compensation. However, they generally receive a discount if they choose to purchase the same quality of yarn used to create the pattern and may occasionally receive a few extra little surprises.

Sign up for the Matsumoto slipover test

Matsumoto is a sleeveless sweater that’s open on the sides. It’s knitted in brioche stitch (English rib). The front and back are held together by a tie that fastens at the front.

For this project, I’m offering you an exclusive look at Towayra’s Panpas Mohair yarn, which is a brand-new Japanese yarn brand. If you choose this yarn, you’ll receive a 15% discount on it.

The test will take place from November 2, 2026, to December 20, 2026.
